By Cindy Ngamba, a Cameroon-born boxer now based in Britain, has made history by becoming the first member of the refugee team to win an Olympic medal. Having secured her place in the middleweight semi-finals at Paris 2024, Ngamba is set to compete against Panama’s Atheyna Bylon for a spot in the final.
Ngamba’s journey to the semi-finals has been nothing short of extraordinary. She started her tournament with a stunning victory over Canada’s Tammara Thibeault, a World gold medallist, and then overcame the French boxer Davina Michel in the quarter-finals, despite facing a raucous French crowd.
Ngamba, who represents the IOC Refugee Olympic Team, has shared her inspiring story, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and self-belief despite facing doubts and hostility. “You have to keep on working hard, keep on believing in yourself,” she said. “You can achieve whatever you put your mind to.”
Despite her success, Ngamba’s achievements have not surprised those within the British boxing community. A three-weight England Boxing national champion, she is supported by the GB setup and trains alongside notable figures like Lauren Price, Savannah Marshall, Chantelle Cameron, and Natasha Jonas. Jonas, in particular, highlighted Ngamba’s development and confidence, noting her progress from her early sparring sessions to her current form.
Jonas, who competed in the 2012 Olympics, advised Ngamba to savor the experience of the Games. Reflecting on her own Olympic experience, Jonas regretted not fully appreciating the moment and encouraged Ngamba to enjoy the unique opportunity. “You need to remember, yes, you’ve been striving towards this moment, but don’t forget to enjoy it,” Jonas said. “It’s a rare experience that most people will never have.”
