Tyrrell Hatton made an impressive return to the DP World Tour at the Betfred British Masters, finishing two strokes behind early leaders Paul Waring and Jeong Weon Ko. Playing in his first regular DP World Tour event since January, Hatton carded an opening-round 69 at The Belfry, putting him in contention but leaving him visibly frustrated with a bogey on his final hole.
Hatton started strong, opening with back-to-back birdies and narrowly missing a third at the par-five third. However, a missed opportunity at the fifth, where he found a bunker off the tee, cost him a shot. Despite his struggles with the putter, Hatton managed to birdie the 10th and 17th holes, staying in the mix.
Reflecting on his performance, Hatton expressed frustration, particularly about missing a short par putt on the last hole after a brilliant bunker shot. “You hit an unreal bunker shot and then miss from three-and-a-half feet—it’s annoying,” he said.
The tournament leaders, Waring and Ko, both shot 67s, with Ko making a remarkable five birdies in a six-hole stretch. England’s Thriston Lawrence, who recently won on the Sunshine Tour, also impressed but fell short of a share of the lead due to a closing bogey, placing him in a group alongside Hatton at three under.
As the competition continues, Hatton and others will look to challenge the leaders in the upcoming rounds. The second round of the British Masters can be watched live on Friday at 12:30 pm on Sky Sports Golf.
