Scheffler Triumphs in Travelers Championship Amid On-Course Protests

Scottie Scheffler clinched his sixth PGA Tour win of the season at the Travelers Championship, overcoming Tom Kim in a playoff. The final round was marked by a protest that saw individuals invade the 18th green and scatter colored powder, causing a temporary pause in play. Despite the interruption, Scheffler secured the win, matching Arnold Palmer’s record of six victories before July.

Entering the final round just behind Kim at TPC River Highlands, Scheffler delivered a bogey-free 65, featuring five birdies to tie with Kim at 22 under. Kim’s 10-foot birdie on the last hole led to a playoff, which was delayed due to the protest. The green was promptly cleaned, and in the playoff, Kim’s bunker trouble contrasted with Scheffler’s steady par, handing Scheffler the title.

Scheffler’s victory adds to his impressive season tally, which includes wins at prestigious tournaments such as The Masters and The Players. His latest triumph solidifies his top spot in the world rankings and the FedExCup standings.

During the playoff, Scheffler’s approach narrowly avoided a bunker, while Kim’s near-perfect approach left him a 10-foot birdie chance. After the protest was resolved, Scheffler’s birdie attempt fell short, but Kim’s miss sent the match to a playoff. There, Kim’s bunker woes continued, and Scheffler’s par was enough to seal the win, marking his twelfth PGA Tour victory and fourth in a Signature Event this year.

Reflecting on the season, Scheffler expressed gratitude for his successes and enjoyed the competitive spirit shared with Kim. He also commented on the protests, noting the confusion but finding solace in his friendship with Kim, which helped both players remain calm.

Tom Hoge’s remarkable final-round 62 earned him a tie for third with Sungjae Im, while Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Justin Thomas, and Akshay Bhatia shared fifth place. Scheffler’s win at the Travelers Championship is a testament to his exceptional form this season, as he continues to dominate the golfing world.
