Defending champion Novak Djokovic has announced he will not be participating in next week’s Cincinnati Open. The Serbian star, who triumphed over Carlos Alcaraz in a grueling final last year, has opted out of defending his title this year. Djokovic’s decision comes shortly after his recent Olympic success in Paris, where he claimed his first Olympic gold medal.
Tournament director Bob Moran acknowledged the tight schedule between the Olympic Games and the Cincinnati Open, expressing understanding for Djokovic’s decision. “His title run here last year was so memorable. We are eager to see him on court again soon,” Moran stated.
Djokovic’s absence opens the way for Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, currently ranked No. 48, to take his place in the draw. Perricard recently advanced to the last 16 at the Citi Open.
The Cincinnati Open serves as a warm-up for the US Open, which begins on August 26. Djokovic, who won his fourth US Open title and 24th Grand Slam overall last year, remains focused on future tournaments despite withdrawing from Cincinnati. He has expressed a desire to compete in the 2028 Olympics and continue representing his country in events like the Davis Cup.
