Anik, who called the event alongside Daniel Cormier and Michael Bisping, faced some criticism for his handling of the title fight. Despite this, Anik, who is known for his commitment to high standards in broadcasting, expressed confidence in his call. He emphasized that his relationships with fighters do not affect his professional integrity during broadcasts.
“I have interpersonal relationships on both sides of this,” Anik stated. “I actually go further back with Leon than I do with Belal. Tim Simpson, [Leon’s] manager, is a good friend of mine. I sleep well at night, I stand by that call, and I stand by Belal Muhammad as a friend.”
Anik acknowledged his close connections within the sport, including his role in Muhammad’s podcast and his long-standing relationships with fighters like Edwards. However, he assured that these connections do not influence his commentary during live events.
Reflecting on the fight, Anik admitted he initially did not favor Muhammad in the matchup. “I didn’t like him in the fight,” Anik revealed. “Leon Edwards is the toughest matchup for him in the welterweight division.” He expressed a desire to see a rematch between Edwards and Muhammad, suggesting that Edwards remains a formidable contender.
Anik also mentioned other rising welterweights, including Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ian Machado Garry, noting their potential in the division. Despite the promotional direction away from an immediate rematch, Anik remains interested in the possibility of Edwards fighting Muhammad again if circumstances allow.
