Conor McGregor’s future in the UFC might soon be clearer, according to UFC CEO Dana White. During an Instagram Live session on Wednesday evening, White hinted at an upcoming announcement regarding McGregor, who has been absent from the octagon since suffering a leg injury in his July 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Despite a planned bout with Michael Chandler falling through this past summer, there has been little news on when McGregor’s much-anticipated return might happen.
White, who has consistently dismissed the possibility of McGregor fighting before the end of 2024, left fans curious about what news might be on the horizon for the former two-division champion. “Conor news coming up, we’ve got Oliveira news coming up,” White said during the live chat. “We’ve got Chandler news coming up. We’ve got Max Holloway news coming up. All that good stuff. Coming soon.”
Following White’s comments, McGregor appeared to respond subtly with a sly emoji, further fueling speculation about his return.
Meanwhile, former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira has been awaiting his next fight since his loss to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300 in April. Oliveira had been expected to secure a title shot and a rematch with Islam Makhachev with a win, but now he is looking to defeat another top contender in the 155-pound division to stay in the title conversation.
Michael Chandler, who has been eager for a fight with McGregor, has been sidelined for nearly two years, but remains confident that the matchup with the Irish star will eventually happen.
As for Max Holloway, White’s mention of the “BMF” champion was surprising, given that Holloway is already scheduled to fight the undefeated featherweight champion Ilia Topuria at UFC 308 on October 26. However, with Holloway being a contender in both the 145 and 155-pound divisions, there may already be plans for him at lightweight, regardless of the outcome at UFC 308.
