Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett made a striking statement on the red carpet in Los Angeles, wearing a top made from over 100 antique spoons. The Australian star was seen in the distinctive halter top at the “Borderlands” fan event on Tuesday. The piece, created by Swedish brand Hodakova, was designed by Ellen Hodakova Larsson, who sourced the 102 antique silver spoons from the Swedish countryside.
Hodakova is known for incorporating heirloom objects into her designs, with a strong commitment to sustainability. The brand aims to become the first fully sustainable fashion house in the world, focusing on changing the fashion industry’s view on circularity. By transforming old materials into luxury fashion items, Hodakova crafts unique stories through the repurposing and conceptual upcycling of everyday found objects.
This eco-conscious approach aligns with Blanchett’s own values. The actor is well-known for re-wearing her red carpet outfits, a practice uncommon in Hollywood. Last year, she notably re-wore a custom Alexander McQueen suit to two different film premieres, four years apart.
Blanchett’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond fashion. During her tenure as artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, she played a key role in installing solar panels on the rooftop of the theater’s historic building in 2010.
This isn’t the first time cutlery has been transformed into couture. In February 2023, during London Fashion Week, designer Dilara Findikoglu created a stunning gown made from antique knives, which has since been worn by celebrities like Emma Corrin and Hari Nef.
In “Borderlands” (2024), Blanchett takes on the role of Lilith in the sci-fi action film based on the popular video game. Directed by Eli Roth, the movie follows a group of misfits on a quest to find a powerful missing girl.
