Cameron Norrie’s Struggles Persist as Wimbledon Approaches

Cameron Norrie’s challenging season persists, with a straight-set defeat in Eastbourne’s first round marking another setback. The former British No. 1, once ranked eighth globally, has tumbled out of the top 40, suffering nine losses in his last 15 matches, including early exits at the French Open and Queen’s.

At the Rothesay International, Norrie faced Emil Ruusuvuori, world No 88, and despite opportunities to break and set points in a tie-break, he couldn’t convert, leading to a 7-6 (9), 6-3 loss. This marks his first opening-round loss at Devonshire Park in five appearances.

British players experienced mixed results. Liam Broady, returning from injury and a bizarre accident, fell to Yoshihito Nishioka. Meanwhile, Giles Hussey capitalized on Kei Nishikori’s withdrawal, defeating Mariano Navone for his first ATP Tour win, an impressive 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Hussey, overcoming a recent concussion, expressed his disbelief and joy post-match, having prepared to face a predominantly clay-court player like Navone. His strategy to play aggressively paid off.

Paul Jubb also celebrated a milestone, securing his first ATP Tour win against Maximilian Marterer at the Mallorca Championships. Jubb, a Wimbledon wild card recipient, advanced to the last 16 with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win after qualifying. As Wimbledon looms, these British players’ fortunes will be closely watched.
