Arsenal has reached an agreement in principle with Real Sociedad to sign Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino for a fee of €38.5 million (£32.67 million). The deal includes an initial payment of €33.5 million (£28.43 million) and an additional €5 million (£4.24 million) in performance-related bonuses.
The 28-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with the Gunners, with the option of extending for a further year. The transfer will be finalized once Merino successfully passes his medical examination.
Merino, who played a crucial role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, including scoring a dramatic 119th-minute winner in the quarter-final against Germany, had entered the final year of his contract with Real Sociedad. His desire to move to the Emirates was clear, and Arsenal has now secured his services.
Having made 242 appearances for Real Sociedad, Merino previously played for Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund, where he won the DFB-Pokal under Thomas Tuchel. His experience and versatility are expected to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad, filling a role similar to that previously held by Granit Xhaka.
The summer transfer window for the Premier League closes on August 30 at 11 PM UK time, giving Arsenal just enough time to finalize the deal and integrate Merino into the team.
