By Andy Murray, the two-time Wimbledon champion, has decided not to participate in this year’s singles event due to a recent back surgery. However, he will still take part in the doubles competition with his brother Jamie.
Murray’s participation was uncertain after he had a spinal cyst removed. He was set to play Tomas Machac but withdrew just hours before the match, choosing to focus on the doubles with Jamie instead.
Murray’s team expressed his disappointment but confirmed his commitment to playing doubles at Wimbledon, potentially for the last time. He has also opted out of the US Open but aims to compete in both singles and doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics with Dan Evans.
David Goffin will replace Murray in the singles draw. Wimbledon officials are preparing to honor Murray’s legacy, with CEO Sally Bolton stating they have plans ready for when Murray decides to retire.
Murray’s Wimbledon journey began in 2005, and he has since won 61 of 74 singles matches there, including titles in 2013 and 2016. His last singles match at the All England Club was a five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the previous year’s second round. Murray’s withdrawal marks the end of an era for him at Wimbledon, but his participation in doubles keeps his presence at the tournament alive.
