Adidas has issued an apology to model Bella Hadid after pulling advertisements featuring her promoting the retro SL72 trainers, originally launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics. The campaign faced backlash from Israel, which accused Adidas of conflating Palestinian identity with terrorism due to Hadid’s involvement. Hadid, an American with Palestinian roots, has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights.
The apology, posted on Instagram, acknowledged the unintended connections made to the tragic events of the 1972 Munich Olympics, where Israeli athletes were taken hostage and killed by the Black September Organization. Adidas expressed regret for any distress caused and announced revisions to the campaign.
Israel’s official account criticized Hadid’s participation, citing her history of alleged antisemitic remarks. Some Jewish organizations condemned Adidas, while others supported Hadid, emphasizing her advocacy for human rights.
Hadid, who has faced death threats for her activism, continues to be a prominent figure in fashion and a strong supporter of Palestinian causes. The apology comes as she reportedly consults with lawyers about her options.
