R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers has acknowledged the “risk” of weather delays due to these conditions. Preparations have been made to manage the impact, including raising the height of the greens and adjusting pin placements to ensure play can continue. Despite the efforts, sustained winds of 23-28 mph and gusts up to 45 mph during the opening round could lead to potential disruptions.
Players will need to contend with the unpredictable elements that are characteristic of links golf. The winds are expected to blow from the same direction over the four days, offering some consistency, but still making the course a formidable challenge.
The last time the AIG Women’s Open was held at St Andrews was in 2013, where strong winds caused play to be suspended, leading to a demanding 36-hole Sunday finish for the leaders. With a similarly challenging forecast this year, players like Gemma Dryburgh hope for some luck with the weather draw, while preparing to face one of the most testing conditions in the sport.
