Tropical Storm Debby Forces First-Round Delay at Wyndham Championship

The first round of the Wyndham Championship, the final event of the PGA Tour’s regular season, has been postponed due to severe weather caused by Tropical Storm Debby. Initially set to begin on Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, the event faced delays as heavy rain and strong winds hit the area, leading to warnings of flash flooding.

Despite initial hopes that conditions might improve, the PGA Tour ultimately decided to reschedule the round for Friday. The National Weather Service issued a stark warning about the storm, labeling it a “dangerous and life-threatening situation.” This alert led to the decision to keep fans away from the grounds and eventually to postpone the start of the tournament altogether.

By Thursday morning, the Greensboro area had already received two inches of rain, with an additional four to six inches expected by the end of the day. The decision to delay was made to ensure the safety of players, staff, and fans.

This delay adds further tension to the event, as it is the last opportunity for players to secure their spots in the FedEx Cup play-offs, with only the top 70 in the standings advancing after this weekend. The revised start times for the first round are expected to be announced by the PGA Tour soon.
