Kyiv Hosts First Ukrainian Fashion Week Since War Began

Ukrainian Fashion Week is set to return to Kyiv this September for its 55th season, marking the first time the event will be held in the city since the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. Despite ongoing conflict, the event will feature around 50 brands showcasing through various mediums including runway shows, installations, and performances.

Symbolic Demonstration of Unity

The main venue for the fashion week will be the Mystetskyi Arsenal, Ukraine’s National Art and Culture Museum Complex. In a symbolic act of unity, designers and models will also parade through the city. This return to Kyiv is seen as a significant step for the country and its fashion industry amid the challenging circumstances brought on by the war.

Challenges and Safety Measures

Lisa Ushcheka, head of international communications for Ukrainian Fashion Week, acknowledges the ongoing war’s impact, including missile attacks, blackouts, and power outages. Protective measures, such as bomb shelters, will be in place at the Mystetskyi Arsenal to ensure the safety of all attendees. Ushcheka emphasizes the resilience and adaptability of the Ukrainian spirit, noting that contingency plans are ready should the conflict escalate.

Attendance and International Support

Local media, industry talent, and influencers are expected to attend, despite international travel advisories against visiting Kyiv. For the past three seasons, Ukrainian designers have showcased their work in Berlin, London, and Copenhagen. Designer Ivan Frolov, among those scheduled to exhibit in Kyiv, highlighted the importance of showcasing their strength and talent on home soil.

Support and Donations

Each participating brand will make a donation to support a new palliative care unit in Kyiv, with guests encouraged to contribute as well. Ushcheka hopes the event will serve as an inspiration globally, demonstrating the resilience and creativity of Ukrainian designers amidst adversity.

Emotional Return to Kyiv

For Frolov, the prospect of returning to Kyiv for the fashion week is deeply emotional. Expressing his love for the city, he emphasized his commitment to reinstating Kyiv as a major fashion hub. The event, supported by the Minister of Culture and the Minister of Economy, aims to reaffirm Kyiv’s place in the global fashion scene despite the ongoing challenges.

Ukrainian Fashion Week’s return to Kyiv represents a significant cultural milestone, showcasing the country’s resilience and determination to thrive even in the face of war.
