Olympics 2024: Hideki Matsuyama Leads After First Round

Hideki Matsuyama shot an impressive eight-under 63 to take a two-shot lead after the opening round at Le Golf National in Paris. Xander Schauffele, fresh off his win at The Open, is close behind. Rory McIlroy is tied for 14th after a three-under round, while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood are tied for sixth at four-under.

Nearly 20,000 spectators braved the heat to watch the action, with Matsuyama making six birdies in his first 10 holes and saving par on the 17th. He expressed satisfaction with his performance but noted areas for improvement.

The round was interrupted twice by lightning, affecting players like Carlos Ortiz, who ended with a 69 after a double bogey on the 16th. Joaquin Niemann, Emiliano Grillo, and Tom Kim are tied at 66, with Scheffler at 67. Scheffler’s family, including his three-month-old son, was present to support him.

Collin Morikawa noted the enthusiastic crowd, especially for French player Matthieu Pavon, who birdied the first hole but finished with a 72. Schauffele, aiming for another gold medal, posted a 65 despite some challenges.
