Rafael Nadal Hints at Skipping US Open and Raises Doubts About Future

Rafael Nadal’s hopes for an Olympic gold in men’s doubles with Carlos Alcaraz ended with a quarter-final loss in Paris. Following this, Nadal hinted that he might skip the US Open, citing the difficulty of his current situation. He also cast doubts on his future in tennis, suggesting that his career might be nearing its end.

Nadal and Alcaraz were defeated by American fourth seeds Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram with a score of 6-2, 6-4. After the match, Nadal gave a lingering wave to the crowd at Court Philippe Chatrier, possibly signaling his last appearance at Roland Garros.

When asked about participating in the US Open, Nadal said it “looks difficult” and that he needs more time to decide. He also expressed uncertainty about continuing his professional career, despite his love for tennis.

Nadal has signed up for the Laver Cup in Berlin in September, which might be his final event, similar to Roger Federer’s farewell at the same event two years ago. Although disappointed by not winning a medal for Spain, Nadal cherished the experience of playing with Alcaraz and the support from the crowd.

Alcaraz, despite his inexperience in doubles, enjoyed playing alongside Nadal and valued the opportunity to learn from him. Both players expressed their disappointment at not progressing further but appreciated the experience.

In other tennis news, Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic advanced to the singles quarter-finals, while Andy Murray’s Olympic journey continues. Angelique Kerber, another retiring champion, faced a tough loss in the women’s singles quarter-finals. Top seed Iga Swiatek continued her winning streak on the Paris clay, and Katie Boulter and Heather Watson reached the quarter-finals in women’s doubles.
