Manchester City Welcomes WSL Top Scorer Vivianne Miedema

Manchester City has announced the signing of Vivianne Miedema, the Women’s Super League’s (WSL) highest goalscorer, on a contract that extends until 2027. Miedema, who parted ways with Arsenal after a seven-year stint, chose City among several interested clubs from Europe and North America. Despite her recent challenges with injuries, including an ACL tear, the 27-year-old forward is eager to return to her best form and contribute to City’s ambitions of winning titles.

During her time with Arsenal, Miedema claimed a WSL title in 2019 and thrice lifted the League Cup. Her move to City aligns with her desire for new challenges and Arsenal’s plans to refresh their squad. Miedema expressed her excitement about joining a team with world-class players and shared her aspirations to help the team succeed.

Gareth Taylor, City’s head coach, is excited to work with Miedema, recognizing her as a significant addition to the squad. Miedema will also reunite with her Dutch teammates Jill Roord and Kerstin Casparij, and is set to begin pre-season training with City at the end of July.

Sky Sports’ Charlotte Marsh highlights that City’s attack is becoming formidable, with talents like Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly, Bunny Shaw, and now Miedema, who can play alongside Shaw or in the No. 10 role. The addition of Miedema, especially on a free transfer, is seen as a strategic move by City as they aim to secure the WSL title and add more silverware to their collection. Miedema’s determination to overcome her injury setbacks is a warning to other WSL teams, signaling her readiness to make an impact in new colors.
