Scheffler, who is vying for his sixth victory of the season, pointed to subtle changes in his swing following a less-than-ideal showing at the US Open. “I feel like I hit it nice,” Scheffler remarked, reflecting on his four birdies, an eagle, and a single bogey on Thursday’s first 18 holes. He expressed confidence in his improved swing, which he fine-tuned earlier in the week.
As he approaches his 28th birthday on Friday, Scheffler is poised to celebrate by securing the 36-hole lead, a feat that would match his best opening-round score of the season.
However, Scheffler is not the only one celebrating a birthday; 21-year-old Tom Kim, who leads the pack after a stellar 62 in the first round, is also in the mix. Kim, a three-time tour winner, is eager to claim his first victory at a major event.
Scheffler, an 11-time tour winner, mentioned a grip adjustment that has been instrumental in his improved play, marking his first round in the 60s since the Memorial Tournament and breaking a streak of rounds in the 70s.
“It’s kind of hard to explain, to be honest with you,” Scheffler said, describing the sensation of getting a better feel at the top of his swing and ensuring his grip is correctly positioned.
Meanwhile, defending champion Keegan Bradley commenced the tournament with a solid one-under 69, setting the stage for a competitive event.
