Ryan Garcia faces a significant hiatus from boxing following a positive test for prohibited substances, resulting in a one-year suspension as agreed with the New York State Athletic Commission. The suspension dates back to an incident after his April 20 fight against Devin Haney. In addition to the suspension, Garcia is required to relinquish his $1.1 million fight purse to Golden Boy Promotions and pay a $10,000 fine to the state.
Compounding Garcia’s troubles, his win against Haney has been retroactively changed to a no-contest, preserving Haney’s undefeated record at 31-0 and adjusting Garcia’s record to 24-1.
This development follows Garcia’s announcement of retirement on social media, which was the peak of several months of unpredictable behavior from the 25-year-old fighter. His social media activity included various extravagant statements, and he arrived overweight for the Haney bout, resulting in a $600,000 penalty and disqualification from claiming Haney’s WBC super lightweight title.
Despite the setback, Garcia had delivered a commendable performance during the fight, knocking Haney down three times, which initially secured him a majority decision victory. However, this result has now been expunged.
Haney acknowledged the commission’s ruling via Twitter, expressing gratitude while also questioning why Golden Boy Promotions should receive Garcia’s fight purse.
