Manchester United is on the brink of deciding whether Erik ten Hag will continue as manager for a third term, with Thomas Tuchel no longer in the running for the position. Ten Hag, who recently returned from vacation, is awaiting the outcome of the club’s ongoing post-season evaluation.
Tuchel, previously at the helm of Bayern Munich and Chelsea, had discussions with United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in France, but he has since been ruled out as a candidate.
Ten Hag, who still has a year remaining on his contract, is currently the manager. However, the extended review period is raising questions about his future. Despite leading the team to an FA Cup victory and securing his second significant trophy in two years, United’s lackluster performance in the Premier League and Europe has led to uncertainty about his role. Aware of the club’s talks with other potential managers, Ten Hag is keen to stay but remains pragmatic about his prospects.
Gareth Southgate was approached regarding the United managerial role but expressed no interest, focusing solely on his responsibilities as England’s head coach. Southgate maintains a positive relationship with INEOS’s Sir Dave Brailsford and has worked closely with the soon-to-be sporting director Dan Ashworth.
Reports suggest that United is also keeping tabs on former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, Brentford’s Thomas Frank, and Graham Potter as potential managerial candidates.
