Laurie Canter of England has achieved his first DP World Tour victory at the European Open in Germany, while his fellow countrywoman Cara Gainer placed fifth at the Ladies European Tour event in Sweden.
Entering the final round tied with Guido Migliozzi at 12 under par in Hamburg, Canter shot a one-under 72 on Sunday, securing the championship after previously finishing second four times on the tour.
The 34-year-old golfer started strong with a birdie, followed by a challenging front nine, but regained momentum with birdies on the 11th, 15th, and 16th holes, the latter thanks to a remarkable 36-foot putt. Despite a bogey on the 17th, he finished the 18th with a par, concluding the tournament at 13 under par, ahead of Bernd Wiesberger and Thriston Lawrence, both at 11 under.
Overcome with emotion, Canter shared his joy and relief at achieving a long-held ambition since his pre-professional days. He emphasized his focus on the facts of the game rather than getting swept up in the event’s atmosphere. This victory not only marks a personal milestone but also opens doors for future opportunities, such as participating in the Scottish Open. Canter hopes this win will bolster his confidence and propel him to further successes in the world of golf.
