Simona Halep, the two-time Grand Slam champion, is set to extend her tennis comeback journey with a wild card entry into the prestigious Madrid Open. Following her return to the court after a reduced doping ban, Halep will grace the clay courts of Madrid from April 22 to May 5, marking her second tournament since her hiatus.
Halep’s inclusion in the Madrid Open comes after her four-year suspension was shortened to nine months on appeal. The Romanian athlete made her comeback appearance at the Miami Open in March, where she faced Paula Badosa in the opening round.
Having previously tasted success at the Madrid Open with consecutive titles in 2016 and 2017, Halep holds a special connection to the tournament. Expressing her gratitude for the wild card opportunity, Halep conveyed her excitement to create more memorable moments in Madrid.
In addition to Halep, former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki will also grace the Madrid Open courts with a wild card entry, marking her return to the WTA Tour after embracing motherhood.
The men’s draw will feature notable wild card entries as well, including 2014 US Open finalist Kei Nishikori and rising Spanish talent Martin Landaluce.
The Madrid Open has been a stage for captivating tennis battles, with Carlos Alcaraz clinching consecutive men’s singles titles in the past two editions. On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning champion, will look to defend her title against fierce competition, including current world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
As Halep and other tennis stars gear up for the Madrid Open, anticipation builds for thrilling matches and memorable moments on the clay courts of Madrid.
